Welcome back to #WellnessWednesday at LexisNexis! The legal profession is one that puts vast amounts of strain on a person, so wellness and mental health are a growing focus among legal professionals and employers.
This week, we’ve got a few new articles for our roundup.
First, ABA Journal’s monthly “Asked and Answered” podcast sits down with Michal Anspach, a recent law school grad who found that his regular routines of meditation and yoga were no match for the mental stresses of practicing law. Anspach says he couldn’t quiet his mind the way he used to, even at night or on weekends. The podcast delves into what he’s learned since then, tips for self-care, and more. Check that out here.
Next up, the ABA has a “well-being template” for legal employers. Available as a downloadable PDF, the template is a policy document for employers on how to deal with workers who have become impaired due to substance abuse, mental health issues, and more. It’s meant to be tailored to each organization, and also to whatever applicable local, state and federal laws. Find that here.
Elsewhere, The Florida Bar (follow them on Twitter, they’re a hoot) notes that its committee for health and wellness of Florida lawyers has set some ambitious goals for the upcoming year. One of the projects they’re exploring is a crisis hotline for lawyers in distress, patterned after a similar program in Georgia. Learn more about that and other projects under consideration here.
Lastly, if you’re in Albany County in upstate New York, join the bar association’s weekly 5k run on Mondays to get the blood pumping. Find contact info here.
