Accelerating Legal Technology: All Lawyers Must And Can!

Technology fears? Change your mindset!

In the book Thank You for Being Late, Thomas L. Friedman notes that:

[T]he accelerating speed of scientific and technological innovations ... can outpace the capacity of the average human being and our societal structure to adapt and absorb them.

This is an extreme statement, and the acceleration part is an absolute truth. But the outpacing part doesn’t have to be. Lawyers can keep pace with (and master) technology if they choose to. Tech Crunch author Pini Yakuel lists these strategies for successful tech adoption:

  • Focus On The Upsides
  • Avoid An All-Or-Nothing Attitude
  • Be Flexible
  • Lean On Your Vendors (But Don’t Break Them)

While a simple list, it’s a good list, though some “I can’t” lawyers won’t buy into it. If you can’t buy into these strategies, then start with this—mindset, specifically a growth mindset.

While you can’t learn all the accelerating technologies of the world, you can focus on the law and learn the accelerating technologies of the legal profession. Listen to this advice from Carol S. Dweck, author of the book Mindset:

Just because some people can do something with little or no training, it doesn’t mean that others can’t do it (and sometimes do it even better) with training.

Old lawyers, new lawyers, paralegals ... everyone in the legal professions can learn, adopt and greatly benefit from accelerating technologies. Half the battle is mindset ... believing that you can do it. The other half is realizing that you must do it.

And you MUST do it because:

Yesterday’s lawyer wanes as tomorrow’s technology accelerates.

But there’s a flipside to this, a more positive and empowering way to look at things. It’s critical for today’s lawyers to understand that:

Successful lawyers are advancing as tomorrow’s technology accelerates.

Advancing Legal Technology: The Value of High-Level Tools

Acceleration is happening everywhere in the law, but if you slowdown and look closely, you’ll learn that some technology accelerates faster than others. This technology sits at the cutting edge. This technology moves at light speed while everything else merely maintains a steady pace.

Cutting-edge technology drives high-level tools, and high-level tools are advancing lawyers and launching legal professions. Without high-level tools, a legal professional is at a severe disadvantage. In this day and age, the lawyer who lacks high-level tools is in retreat. He or she is behind the competition by decades!
