School buses are yellow for a reason. They are bright, they stand out, they are visible. They need to be visible to motorists because these buses are carrying precious cargo; our children. Preventing personal injury and accidents and other collisions is extremely important, but all things considered, especially around school buses. Idaho’s law regarding school buses are in place and prosecuted for the safety of children and motorists alike. The following is a reminder to you as the operator of a motor vehicle of your obligations around school buses.
Every motorist, when approaching a school bus stopped on a highway that has its alternating red lights flashing and its stop-arm extended, shall stop before reaching the school bus. The motorist shall remain stopped and not proceed until the bus resumes motion or the lights and arm are no longer actuated.
Oncoming traffic on a highway of three (3) or more lanes is not required to stop when meeting a school bus with its above referenced lights actuated.
By obeying these laws, motorists help prevent personal injury to children who may be crossing the highway in proximity of the school bus. Do your part and be a safe and courteous driver at all times and especially around school buses.
