Super Bowl L Ads: More Positive, But Weird

For all of you who missed out on the Super Bowl (or just chose not to watch it) you didn’t miss much. While I personally was cheering for Peyton Manning to lead his Denver Broncos to victory (SPOILER ALERT: Broncos won 24-10) , I was more interested in if the commercials would see a bounce back from the factory of sadness that they seemed to be last year (see my feelings on them here) and I have to say the companies stepped up to the challenge of being more positive, however they may have gotten weirder in the process. Here are my thoughts regarding some of the commercials that aired last night:

1.  Avocados - Bounty of Earth

Thoughts:

This was probably my favorite of all the Super Bowl commercial. To take aliens and make them go through a museum of our earthly life which included our “Cube of Ribic” a “form of torture (airplane)” and the infamous “White & Gold dress that caused a civil war”(let’s be real-it was black & blue) is creative and hilarious. But the point of this commercial is to sell avocados and that’s where the aliens’ tour ends- at an avocado tree.

 2. Anheuser Busch- BL/Party/Superbowl

Thoughts:

While Yahoo! gave this ad a “C” grade, I thought this was a pretty funny ad. Comedians Amy Schumer and Seth Rogen showed great chemistry and Rogen’s quoting of the famous “Independence Day” speech by Bill Pullman was just the icing on the cake.

3.  BMW Mini - Defy Labels

Thoughts:

The companies who received backlash from their depression Super Bowl ads from last year should take notes from BMW Mini. BMW was able to take a subtle jab at our problem with stereotyping while selling their product. Not only did were they able to do that, but they were able to do so in manner that didn’t come off as depressing. Instead they sold it in a manner which came off as fierce and confident. If only last years’ commercials would have approached their ads the same way.

4.  Anheuser-Busch - Simply Put

Thoughts:

First off, I believe this had a great message in a unique way, however I didn’t understand why a company such as Anheuser Busch ,who has already developed such a great storyline with their iconic Clydesdales (and puppy), would go astray from it. I’ve always believed- if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

5.  NFL Mountain Dew- PuppyMonkeyBaby

 Thoughts:

Um…yeah… Not much to say about this one besides “weird” and “kinda creepy”. I get the whole “three-in-one” comparison, but to use a baby, puppy and monkey to create a creature doesn’t make an appealing thing. I don’t know about you, but a “PuppyMonkeyBaby” doesn’t make me want a Mountain Dew. Sorry Mountain Dew.
