Being in court day in and day out, sometimes lawyers forget how some clients feel when going to court, especially individuals who have never been in a courtroom. The Jersey City Municipal Court is located at 365 Summit Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07306. The cross streets are Newkirk Street and Sip Avenue. Depending on the charge will depend on how the case is handled. If you have a DWI/DUI or criminal charge, your first appearance will be your chance to enter a plea of guilty or not-guilty. This is also a time to inform the court if you are going to hire a private attorney to represent your interests. If it is a traffic matter, you may be able to go to court once and dispose of the case, however, it is still highly recommended to have a lawyer to poke holes in the prosecution's case. Some important tips when you attend the Jersey City Municipal Court or any court for the matter are:

  • Be on time
  • Be respectful to everyone in the courtroom
  • Dress conservatively (no hats, tuck your shirt in, comb your hair)
  • Treat the Judge with respect and speak nicely to him or her. You only have one chance for a first impression
  • Be prepared. Bring any documents that may help your defense or give them to your lawyer before you go.
  • Shut you cell phone off or place the ringer on vibrate, do not disrupt the court.

The Judge does not want to know your side of the story, he or she wants to know if you have made a deal or not. A trial is where explanations can be made if you elect to testify (you have a right to remain silent) and allow the prosecutor to try and prove the case. If you face charges such as: possession of CDS, driving while intoxicated, refusing to give a breath sample, assault, driving while suspended, driving without insurance, harassment, domestic violence related charges, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report, reckless driving or any other case that carries points, business and construction code violations, suspensions, a criminal record, and/or jail time, call us today on 201-706-7910 to setup an appointment in our local office in 35 Journal Square, Suite 825, Jersey City, NJ.
