Divorce and Child Custody in New Jersey, Setting Goals with Your Client

Facing a divorce is a difficult part of a person's life. In some cases, it does not have to be. You do not have to be "enemies" with the person you once loved and married. Making decisions in anger is not the wisest time to do so because your thinking is not clear and you may regret your decisions if taken too far. When I meet with clients for a divorce and/or child custody case, I work with the clients to set out realistic goals for their case. By setting realistic goals, the client remains more focused as does the attorney. While we do need to know about the specifics of the case and what led to this point in time, we try not to harp on the past and focus on how we can mold the future. There are many issues to discuss in a divorce consultation: are there children? are there assets to divide? are you seeking alimony? are you receiving or paying any money now to your spouse? The list continues.
