What inspires someone to pursue a career in the legal field? For attorney Joelle Sharman, growing up watching legal dramas like “L.A. Law” and “Law & Order,” ultimately drove her interest in practicing law.

“I thought I wanted to be a prosecutor and specifically spent my last semester of law school as a visiting student in Miami to intern at the State Attorney’s Office.”

Like the lawyers in the legal dramas that she grew up admiring, Joelle’s has held the spotlight as a top civil and appellate litigator during the past 20 years. Serving as a Partner at Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP, Joelle has a diverse practice, and when she isn’t inside the courtroom, Joelle is either writing or speaking on the topics of insurance, employee benefits, and ERISA matters.

While Joelle’s robust career has included some “shocking” moments both inside and outside of the courtroom, with one memory that stands apart from the rest.

“My all-time most memorable experience as a practicing attorney was making partner in 2003. The walls shook from my screams of excitement.”

And for those moments when things get a bit too overwhelming, Joelle’s advice to other attorneys:

“Breathe and roll with the punches. Be open to new areas of law even if they do not seem appealing at first glance. And remember that the client is always right even when you know they are not.”

When Joelle isn’t inside the courtroom, she is contributing her knowledge as the written word in the Employee Benefits Guide, which is a Matthew Bender publication. Joelle is the co-author of this publication which is available via the LexisNexis® Store
