Lexis Advance users are sometimes irritated when their search doesn’t return the results they need or when they want to search the official codes, but the Statutes & Legislation tab has a mix of bills, public laws, congressional record, legislative histories, etc. Below, I have included a few tips to help answer these questions that I am hoping will lessen any frustration when using Lexis Advance.

1. Search doesn’t return results I need

Before when running a search on Lexis Advance, your results would only show 6 or 7 high-level content types forcing you to select the “Show More” button from the left-hand navigation in order to see all of them. Now, with the new updated release, your search results are automatically expanded so right away you can see the amount of results in each category. (Highlighted below in green.)

2.  Applying Filters for Sub-Categories?

Say you would like to search all caselaw and quickly see the Ohio cases listed first. With the updated release, we added the ability to surface your favorite jurisdictions as a standard. You can easily set this up by selecting the “Settings” option from the More Dropdown.

Then, choose how you want post-search filters to be displayed in your result sets. You have the option to sort by jurisdiction, location, and / or court filters (highlighted below in yellow). You also have the option to surface these post-search filters first in your list of result sets (highlighted below in green).

And, don’t forget to save all of your changes by selecting the “Save Changes to Settings & Close” button at the very bottom of the page.

Still having trouble?

And if you are still having trouble, we now offer Live Support to all customers via the More tab, which allows you to chat live with learned professionals about your research needs!
