When it comes down to it, where does the real work get done - at the office, at home, or another remote location?

The results of the 2013 ABA Legal Technology Survey indicated a decrease in the number of attorneys that have virtual office or telecommute. Even so, a recent episode of the TED Talk Radio Hour included an interview with Jason Fried, founder of 37signals, discussing how the traditional office structure inhibits rather than supports work.

With the well-publicized decision of Yahoo's CEO, Marissa Mayer, to require employees to work on-site, there has been an ongoing debate about how effective employees are when they work virtually. Does it depend upon the nature of the work? Is the ideal state a hybrid between virtual and on-site?

In your experience, what are some of the pros and cons associated with working in an office vs working at home?
